Phoslock Isn’t an Algaecide
Phoslock does not kill algae. It’s not a registered algaecide like some of the other solutions we talked about. Phoslock is specifically designed to remove phosphorus from the water column and accumulated in water body sediments. Nutrient Mitigation Methods
The focus of this episode will be nutrient mitigation and phosphorus inactivation with Phoslock. So, how do we remove phosphorus from a system once it gets in? It's very difficult to do that, to take phosphorus out of the water. Our approach was to bind it up in a non-bioavailable form. We found a unique product that has been thoroughly studied and used throughout the world.
This is a patented phosphorus-locking technology. It provides a rapid and permanent removal of phosphorus. It's environmentally friendly. It’s very safe for fish, invertebrates, and people. It's NSF certified for use in drinking water. And, it's not a pesticide.
Origin of Phoslock
There are over 70 peer-reviewed studies on how Phoslock works and how it can restore water resources all across the world. The Australian government wanted to create a product that would offset poor water quality due to high phosphorus levels, and they helped fund and develop this product.
We thought Phoslock was an innovative technology that could really help improve water quality throughout the United States, so we worked with them to bring it to your waters. This is the only product specifically designed for use in surface waters to bind phosphorus.
How it Works
Phoslock uses a unique patented process to bind phosphorus. It's an element called lanthanum, which is a common, natural element in the earth's crust. It has a high affinity for phosphorus, and it’s very specific to binding free phosphorus in your water body.
Phoslock has a bentonite clay matrix with that lanthanum built right in to provide rapid and permanent phosphorus removal. And again, this product has a very high affinity to rapidly bind phosphorus. It’s able to grab it out of the water column. If you put it out as a slurry, it can disperse through the water column and grab that phosphorus out. Phoslock can also inactivate a lot of free phosphorus found in sediment layers.
Tightly Binds With Phosphorus
The bond with Phoslock and phosphorus is extremely strong. The lanthanum forms this tight mineral after it binds to phosphorus. This mineral is called rhabdophane. Rhabdophane is highly stable, and it doesn't re-release under different environmental conditions.
Over time, it actually becomes more tightly bound, forming a different mineral called monazite. Some of the other technologies out there certainly don't bind phosphorus as tightly, and over time their bond with phosphorus may become undone or may become looser.
Versatile & Many Use Cases
Phoslock can be very effective in diverse water conditions. Many different waters and many different sites can use Phoslock, whether it’s lagoons, ponds, or reservoirs. It’s a very environmentally friendly product that is safe for fish and invertebrates, and again, provides better water quality throughout many different areas. It’s a proactive approach to enhancing water quality.
