Grand Haven Fights Phragmites

Cattails, muskrat dens, birds and  a variety of aquatic animals have begun their return to Harbor Island. “It is looking like it should instead of being taken over,” Grand Haven City Councilman Mike Fritz said. Though the island is showing noticeable progress, local businesses and officials know that long-term management is essential to control. “This is an ongoing effort,” said Joe Vander Stel, manager of the local water treatment plant. “If you go upstream, you still have some phragmites growing.”
