Lake Erie Algae Calms Down

With the arrival of cooler temperatures, algal blooms usually end in Lake Erie by mid-September; which must come as a relief to Toledo residents who were warned this summer not to drink water due to contamination. Ohio Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown, and U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur have called for new federal regulations for drinking water, requiring the EPA to release a health advisory and to provide federal guidance on microcystin levels. Guidelines are available from the World Health Organization, to help officials make decisions, but they are only guidelines and decisions are left up to local officials.
