New York to Tighten Grip on Invasives

While local groups have taken matters into their own hands, removing water chestnut from Braddock Bay and spreading information about invasives, state and federal officials hope to help in the control of invasive species. New York Sen. Kristen Gililbrand and Fairport Rep. Louise Slaughter are backing the “Invasive Fish and Wildlife Protection Act,” a much-needed update to a 112-year-old statute, while Southern Tier state Sen. Tom O’Mara is leading a measure that would require boats to be cleaned and inspected before entering public, private or commercial launches.
