Quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) are a black-and-white mussel, native to the Black Sea, that have the ability to poison water, and they have just been voted “most likely to invade” by 21 institutions. The mussels, particularly troublesome because of their eating habits, filter water, stripping it of valuable food and making it potentially poisonous. Enough mussels in one area can alter the composition of the water they inhabit. The increased water transparency (a side effect of the mussels’ filtering) may seem like a benefit, but the increased clarity allows for sunlight to reach deeper, encouraging often unwanted vegetative growth.
