Salvinia on Caddo Lake is about to meet its only known natural predator, the giant salvinia weevil. The weevil, like the plant, hails from Brazil, and now that it's been shown to do well here, a local group is entering it into the war. “We’re going from research to high production,” said Darren Hudson, president of Greater Caddo Lake Association. The weevils won't replace traditional methods such as mechanical removal and herbicides, but rather augment current efforts. And they're here to stay; as Stella Borrow says, "You can knock it back, but there’s got to be balance. You’ve got to keep enough salvinia to keep the weevils happy.”
